What Each Holiday Means for HR Teams<\/h2>\n

Labor Day \u2014 September 7<\/h3>\n

Labor Day falls on the first Monday of September \u2014 a Monday closure that creates a four-day weekend for most employees. Expect a spike in leave requests on the Friday before (September 4) as employees try to extend the weekend. Columbus Day \u2014 October 12<\/h3>\n

A Monday federal holiday that closes banks and pauses ACH processing. Not all private employers observe it \u2014 but payroll teams should confirm processing cutoffs with their bank if payroll runs on or near October 12. Veterans Day \u2014 November 11<\/h3>\n

Veterans Day falls on Wednesday November 11 \u2014 a mid-week federal holiday that doesn’t extend any weekend but does close banks and pause ACH. For payroll teams running Wednesday payroll, shift the processing deadline to Tuesday November 10. For teams tracking attendance, a mid-week federal holiday often produces higher-than-expected unplanned absences on the surrounding days.<\/p>\n

Thanksgiving \u2014 November 26<\/h3>\n

The biggest leave management event of Q4. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday November 26, and the Friday after \u2014 while not a federal holiday \u2014 sees the majority of private employers closing. FedACH processing for Thanksgiving ends November 25 at 11:30 p.m. ET \u2014 payroll teams should confirm deadlines with their processor by Tuesday November 24.<\/p>\n

Expect leave requests to cluster heavily around November 24\u201328. Teams managing PTO requests during the holiday season<\/a> should establish coverage minimums and first-come-first-served approval rules well before October to avoid conflicts.<\/p>\n

Christmas Day \u2014 December 25<\/h3>\n

Christmas falls on Friday December 25. FedACH processing ends December 24 at 11:30 p.m. ET and resumes December 27. For teams running bi-weekly payroll, the December 25 and January 1 holidays in consecutive weeks create back-to-back processing deadline shifts \u2014 plan both in advance.<\/p>\n
