What Is the Absenteeism Policy?

The absenteeism policy is a set of guidelines or practices that serves the purpose of reducing the number of workdays that an employee misses.

An absenteeism policy lines down all the acceptable reasons for which an employee can take time off. These reasons may be being absent due to injury, illness, an unforeseeable event, or if they had already time off scheduled. Similarly, the absenteeism policy also mentions disciplinary action to be taken in case of excessive absenteeism or tardiness.

A policy of absenteeism strictly mentions everything about the employee attendance policy and tardiness. Absenteeism policy consists of various types of leaves including vacation time off, paid time off, sick leave policy, maternity leave, and others. Additionally, an absenteeism policy also lays down guidelines for when an employee works more than their regular working hours or days. 

The best policy is the one that encourages employees to be fair when taking a leave. Meaning, it motivates them to miss the working days as little as possible. Secondly, a good policy is fair to the employees in terms of granting leave for all valid reasons.

Why Is Absenteeism Policy Important?

The policy of absenteeism in the workplace promotes several things like productivity boost. Additionally, it also helps prevent financial losses. Regular attendance policy training helps employers get the best out of the policy by training and motivating employees to not miss work and improve attendance. 

Using PTO to Reduce Absenteeism

Paid time off is an agreed-upon number of days that an employee can take off due to various reasons like sick leave or vacations.  Offering paid time off to employees in addition to national and state leaves is a good idea to tackle the employee absenteeism issue. Paid time off is a fully compensated leave that employees receive regardless of employees missing work on these days. A well-implemented PTO policy is one that consists of complete details of the paid time off that an employee may claim. This includes a way to tracking these leave days, how many days in total an employee can take leave, and how many PTO days are left. 

When employees are given paid time off they are less likely to take extra leaves other than that. Secondly, when employees know they have a limited number of paid days to take off, they will be careful about when to take time off or how much work they miss

The best policy also points out to whom should the employees report their absences. To motivate employees from taking fewer leaves, HR professionals should consider rewarding employees for maintaining good attendance. This will also help power the absence rate.
