What Is Competency?

Competency is a set of skills and characteristics that enable a person to perform effectively and efficiently.

Although competency and skill are used interchangeably, they are not similar.  Skills are learned while competencies are inherent qualities that an individual possesses. Examples include collaboration, knowledge, and ability.

Competencies fall into three categories:

  1. Behavioral competencies: softer skills required for a job role.
  2. Technical competencies: hard skills required such as the ability to use computers and IT systems.
  3. Leadership competencies: possessing the qualities to take charge and lead.
